STEP 1

Calculate your carbon footprint

You can calculate your carbon footprint or offset based on the average CO2(e) emissions of your country.

STEP 3

Offset your emissions with us

As a Verra certified organisation, Tui’k Ruch’Lew can trade carbon emissions. In the last years, we have been developing a comprehensive system to install and maintain improved cookstoves. Each cookstove is reducing the carbon emissions by 3.089 tonnes of CO2 in the first year of its use (in comparison to open fire usage). Over the lifetime of the improved cookstove, the emission reductions add up to 27 tonnes of CO2.

A SINGLE ONIL STOVE

  • Reduces de firewood consumption up to 70% (saving about 62 trees per year)

  • Reduces the amount of unpaid work for Maya Tz’utujil people for collecting firewood (on average 2 days per week)

  • Reduces household air pollution by 99%

  • Reduces 3.089 tonnes of CO2(e) in its first year of use.

REDUCING EMISSIONS

Our improved cookstove program constantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions because the ONIL cookstove uses 70% less fuel than the open fires commonly used in the Lake Atitlan region. In addition, our team regularly services the ONIL stoves, which increases their energy efficiency, further reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Based on our analysis, we know that a single ONIL cookstove offsets 3.089 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in its first year of use while also improving health, quality of life, and livelihoods. Over its lifetime, a single improved cookstove, reduces emissions up to 27 tonnes of CO2. (Three tonnes of CO2(e) emissions equal about one-fifth of the average per capita emissions in the US.)

THE OBJECTIVE: CARBON NEUTRAL

We all know by now: the temperature is rising, forests are burning, glaciers are melting, cities are flooded. And this is just the beginning. Climate change is a very serious problem and one of the biggest responsibilities of our time. The objective is clear: to become carbon neutral by 2030. And according to science, we only have two strategies to reach this ambitious goal:

  • reduce emissions

  • increase the carbon sinks such as tropical rainforest

With our improved cookstove project, we are contributing to both strategies (burning less firewood and protecting the native forests from deforestation). YOU can help us work toward these key strategies by erasing your environmental footprint with us.
